Here is what me and Alissa made for our boys this Valentine's Day  - chocolate Valentine's

We baked a basic chocolate sponge - the one from the package, where you add 3 eggs, cup of water and 1/3 cup of oil.

Then, we cut out hearts of various colour using cookie cutters

For filling and decoration - basic chocolate ganache + whipped cream + sweet cherries

Chocolate Ganache

250 grams semi sweet chocolate chips

1 cup of whipping cream

1/3 cup of butter

Put all the ingredients in a glass bowl, microwave for 2 minutes, mix well until even, let cool, whip with a mixer for 3-4 minutes

Whipped Cream

2 cups whipping cream + 1/2 cup icing sugar - beat till steady peaks

Fill the pastries and decorate up to your liking

I was not allowed to decorate - Alissa did it all!

Foody Thursday - Warm Quinoa Salad

It is all about healthy eating now, right? Some "healthy" recipes you come across just make you want to quit healthy eating once and forever. This one is not one of those :) We actually made it up with kids, then ate it, then made it again to take pictures. And kids are picky eaters....

2 cups of pre-cooked quinoa (we had a mixture of white and red quinoa)

1 bunch of green onion

1 can of red kidney beans (rinsed)

1 yellow bell pepper sliced

Dump it all at the same time into a wok or high frying pan and stir fry with some oil (we used grape) until it is warm all though.

Add salt, pepper, tea spoon of soy sauce.

Bon appetite!

Hey, You! - Take Your Shoes Off!
Posted on Tue, 05 May 2015, 11:27:03 AM  in My services,  Just for fun,  Happy Houses,  Home Owners Tips,  Toronto,  Open House
Tags:,  ,

As I already mentioned on FB yesterday, I had the most silly experience with the Home Seller yesterday. While myself and my buyer client were touring the house, home Seller grabed our shoes that were left by the front door and parked them outside the front door, right on the busy sidewalk in downtown Toronto.

While some of my friends thought it was a pure outrage, I find it kind of funny, especially considering the fact that the house was not clean at all and we should have just kept our shoes on.

Now, this is what I wanted to discuss for the longer time - shoes issue.

1. Slip ons - I was thinking whether I should get those plastic slip ons to go over your shoes, but then, what if the client slips in those and falls?

2. Putting that "Remove your shoes" sign - Dear Seller, please, have mercy, make sure you have the right to do so, meaning, your house is clean enough, nothing is crawling in the basement, random nails are not sticking out and there are no puddles of water on the floor.

3. I was diligently asking my clients to bring spare pair of inside shoes, but sometimes they just come straight from work or just simply forget.

4. I was offered slippers by the Seller before - no, thank you

5. I always have a spare pair in a car but I feel bad wearing it when my client goes barefoot.

Such a shoe dilemma :) And dont take this post seriously - I am just thinking out loud :)

Foody Thursday - Little Mermaid Cake

Known and loved by many polish honey layered cake - this time in the shape of Little Mermaid. As many of you know, I don't take orders for the cakes anymore - no time baby! But for my favourite niece's birthday I am prepared to stay up all night :)

Little Mermaid Cake

Recipe for the layers and filling could be found here - 3D Guitar Cake

Little Mermaid Cake is a variation of traditional Barbi Cake. I just don't like barbies, only real dolls :)
We will need to bake quite a few circular layers of different diameter for the skirt - same idea as in Guitar Cake.
Make a whole in each layer using a cookie cutter or a drinking glass and stack them up from biggest to the smallest alternating with cream filling
Mermaid Cake - layers

Mermaid Cake - layers2
Make the stack as high, as your doll's waist, or a little higher
Ready skirt
I am using a usual rubber doll - it will need to be thoroughly washed, hair must go up, the bottom part must be wrapped in food grade plastic - cling wrap here
Wrapping a doll
Now the doll is ready to put on her skirt!
Inserting a doll

Doll in a cake

The skirt still looks quite ugly - we will need to cut the excess using serated knife and smoothen the skirt up using left over filling and a spatula
Smoothing the edges

And one-two-three - have fun decorating! We used regular marshmallow foundant, cut marshmallows, sprinkles and creamcheese frosting for the bottom frills of the skirt!

Also, our doll was holding a candle in each hand, as my darling niece turned 2!

Cheers!

Back from Montreal - sharing impressions

I was catching up for over a week after coming back from Montreal. This is a "beauty" of being your own boss - noone tells you what to do but then noone will jump in to help when you are taking your crazily ambitious and competetive child to meets and competitions. But anyways, we are back to normal and I've got some time to share pictures and impressions

College Notre Dame

Our schedule was pretty tight, as usual
Friday - driving to Montreal and late practice
Saturday - all day competitions. As some of you might know, Aliska got silver in free, gold in hoop and gold overall - very content with herself.
And finally on Sunday we got some time for a tour. Weather was yaki - not too cold, but dark and gloomy, so pictures did not come out the best.
Streets of Montreal
We started at College Notre Dame and L'Oratoire right across the street.
Brother Andre

Saint-Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal - L'Oratoire - deserves a post on its own.

And to be completely honest - this is probably the only thing I personally liked in Montreal
Saint-Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal
Saint-Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal - Monument at the front
Then our guide took us up the winding road right to the Oratory. The road goes through one of the richest areas of Montreal. As we were told, there was a law that did not allow to build to buildings that were the same. Taking pictures from the back seat of the car is quite challenging I shall admit
Rich area of Montreal 2

This home looks quite misterious in the fog.

We made a quick stop, as per our guide, no many know about this viewing point.

Our next stop was the entrance to L'Oratoire.

Travelling in XXI century - you wouldn't believe
Posted on Mon, 08 Dec 2014, 10:27:01 AM  in Just for fun,  Happy Houses

My Mom is 62. By this age she learned to hate travelling, so when she has to, it'd better be short and fast. Nothing like her recent trip from Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine to Toronto. It took her over 57 hours, while normal travel time should take about 12 including boarding, security and luggage pick up.

Bad Travel experience

As I mentioned, normal travel time would be around 12 hours - 1-hour flight from Ivano-Frankivsk to Kiev, and about 8 hour flight from Kiev to Toronto.

What my Mom hadd to go through in reality is just insane and unbelievable....
Flight from Ivano-Frankivsk to Kiev is cancelled (noone really knows the reasons) - she has to take an overnight train - 1 hour vs. 13 hours
Flight from Kiev to Toronto is cancelled (political situation, we've been told) - Mom has to take another train to Moscow - another 14 hours
Flight from Moscow to Toronto gets cancelled (again, no reasons explained) - Mom is being placed on the flight Moscow-Amsterdam instead - another 6 hours (about 4 hours flight to Amsterdam plus 2 hours waiting time before the flight to Toronto)
Now we are getting to the most exiting part - right after Mom arrives to Amsterdam. If her previous misfortune could somehow be explained - political situation, wars and riots, enemies of the Queen and so on, what happens after is just completely ridiculous.
Flight Amsterdam - Toronto, yes, you guessed right - gets cancelled due to "technical difficulties" - I am thinking they scotch-taped the tail and it froze and fell off! And Mom gets placed on a flight to !!! Vancouver !!!!. Yes, out of all Canadian and American cities - Ottawa, Montreal, St. Johns, New York, Chicago, Buffalo, even Winnipeg, Atlanta, Calgary, she has to go to the West Coast when she is aiming for the East. Another 10 hours!
And finally Vancouver to Toronto, just 5 hours.....
The best part is that the tickets were bought well in advance - in August. Now I am wondering how far ahead of XIX century are we?

Пост на русском - для наших дорогих бабушек и дедушек. В клубе "Поварята" - пятое занятие. Поварята уже многому научились, но желание стряпать у них пока не пропало

Tiny Chefs - Class 5

Tiny Chefs Club Meeting - Class 4 - Yeast Dough

At our Class 4 Tiny Chefs learned how to make yeast dough from scratch - they mixed all the ingredients, watched the dough raise and grow, learned to form round buns, flower buns with jam, porcupines and braids.

Tiny Chefs - Class 4

We made basic yeast dough - no milk, no eggs, just flour, sugar, yeast, salt and sunflower oil.

We learned that yeast dough is "live" and can breeze, that it likes delicate touch and positive attitude. In all my baking experience I never saw an angry evil person who managed to make a beautiful breads or buns. Here is your personality test!

All our dear Tiny Chefs are a great treat to work with! And you know, the food prepared with heart will never harm!

Next Sunday we will be making traditional Russian food - pelmeni, of course, from scratch, as we like to know what goes into our buddy. Also, I have a great surprise for the Tiny Chefs - see you all on Sunday
